The main nuclear complex in Yongbyon County in the DPRK, used for the production of fuel for nuclear weapons, has resumed its work. This is reported by Sky News with reference to the annual report of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
According to data obtained by the agency from satellites, at the beginning of July 2021, water was discharged at the facility to cool the reactor. The five-megawatt reactor produces plutonium — one of the two key ingredients used to create nuclear weapons.
The IAEA also reports that from mid-February to early July, signs of a radiochemical laboratory were detected in the area of the nuclear complex.
In February, the former acting head of the North Korean embassy mission in Kuwait, Ryu Hyun, who fled the country, questioned the possibility of denuclearization. According to the diplomat, the head of the DPRK, Kim Jong-un, will not give up the nuclear arsenal. "North Korea's nuclear power is directly related to the stability of the regime," Ryu Hyun stressed.
In early January, North Korean leader Kim Jong-un announced the country's plans to improve nuclear weapons. He called for improving nuclear technologies by reducing the size and weight, increasing the strategic power of nuclear weapons, as well as developing universal strategic weapons for different objects and purposes.
